Distributed communities of practice in the platform economy: three cases from Mexico
Keywords:
distributed communities of practice, platform economy, open innovation, digital sociotechnical systemAbstract
Our purpose is to address the role played by Distributed Communities of Practice in the platform economy. The conceptual framework we use to analyze a community of drone techno-entrepreneurs, a digital manufacturing lab and Mexico's chapter of a health hackaton, is integrated by the following analytical axes: the first one addresses the rectory of technological mediation in the platform economy; the second presents the characteristics that distinguish these communities and the motivations and operating dynamics of techno-entrepreneur; the third analyzes the digital sociotechnical system where centers and peripheries persist, which gives account of strategies of production and appropriation of value of creative ideas. From conventional and virtual ethnographic research, we were able to analyze the complex interweaving of repertoires of action and links that contribute to the understanding of the prevailing logic of accumulation in contemporary capitalism.
