The dissent from Jewish orthodoxy and its representation in the series Unorthodox
Keywords:
Judaism, Jewish Orthodoxy, Religious Dissent, Television SeriesAbstract
The article focuses on the phenomenon of dissent from Jewish orthodoxy, assuming as a starting the Netflix series, Unorthodox (in Portuguese, Nada Ortodoxa), which aired in 2020 as part of a rising trend: the dissemination and popularity of series about Jewish Orthodox communities. Dissent, desertion or religious disaffiliation is a phenomenon little studied in Social Sciences vis-í -vis its opposite: religious conversion. Taking this gap as a reference and based on Victor Turner's approach, in the article we analyze the different stages of orthodoxy dissent, emphasizing the liminality that characterizes it.Downloads
