Abstract

The objective of this article is to contribute to the discussion on the study of agroecological innovation niches and their importance for understanding the socio-technical transition processes for rural sustainability. To this end, the case of a group of farmers in the Sierra de Amula region in the State of Jalisco in Western Mexico is taken up. In this study, it is argued that grassroot innovators play a fundamental role in the adaptation of new techniques and practices in agroecology. This study is qualitative, since the data collection was carried out from an ethnographic approach, in addition to various interviews and life stories with key actors. The results show that pioneer farmers in experimenting with the techniques and principles of agroecology -after going through a phase of marginalization and lack of recognition- developed a great experience that positioned them as advisers when other local producers needed to explore new alternatives. Analyzing the way in which these pioneer farmers emerge and are maintained, from an approach centered on the actors and their territory, generates a greater understanding of the importance that they have in strengthening the transition processes towards agroecology in the medium and long term.
