Otomi workers from the Sierra Norte de Puebla, Mexico, in the agribusiness of the U.S. New New South

In this paper, we study an emerging migratory flow at the end of the 1970s in San Pablito Pahuatlán, an Otomi locality in the municipality of Pahuatlán, in the Sierra Norte of Puebla. We are interested in revealing the oscillating relationship between the surplus populations of central Mexico and capital, inscribed in new forms of domination over labor. The Texas Valley was the anteroom of a route that led to the insertion of undocumented Otomi workers in the agribusiness of a reconverted region renamed Nuevo New South. We unravel how structural forces filter into the daily lives of these workers both at the sites of production and border crossing, as well as in the circuits of reproduction of the labor force commodity at the place of origin. In different phases of a long-term investigation that began in 2007, we conducted fieldwork in the municipal capital and in Otomi and Nahua localities. In that year, we applied a questionnaire to third grade students of the middle schools and high schools (Telesecundarias and Bachilleratos) of the municipal seat, San Pablito Pahuatlán, Atla and Xolotla. In 2010, by applying a modified version of the Mexican Migration Project survey in the municipal seat of Pahuatlán, we generated quantitative information that nourished one database. In 2013 and 2014, we conducted short stays in Durham and Orange Counties in North Carolina. On both sides of the border, we interviewed men and women from diverse generational cohorts, returned and active migrants, as well as non-migrants.References
