Collective bargaining of labor conditions in the rural sector in Uruguay

The processes of modernization of rural activity in Uruguay have profoundly modified labor relations, forms of contracting, working hours and levels of remuneration. These changes expanded modern market relations in the rural world, modified working conditions and generated opportunities for the development of trade union forms similar to those in the urban environment. Despite these transformations, and despite notable advances in labor legislation and the development of collective bargaining since 2005, rural workers continue to face difficulties in participating in sectoral decisions and in asserting their labor rights in the different areas in which they are applied. The accumulated research on this topic shows that rural trade union organizations have not reached the levels of legitimacy that other sectors of activity have. In this sense, the article seeks to explore the development of collective bargaining in the last fifteen years in the three subgroups that make up the rural milieu, in the specific subject of labor and health conditions in the sector. The investigation of this process is carried out through two dimensions: the analysis of the perceptions that employers, workers and state representatives have had of the negotiation process, which emerge from the application and study of the different agreements that have been signed in this area in the negotiation groups of the rural milieu.References
